Handwriting Readiness & Pre-Writing Skills Programme in East Delhi

Short answer: Handwriting readiness therapy focuses on the specific hand strength, pencil grip, hand-eye coordination and pre-writing shapes a child needs before and while learning to write clearly. It is useful both for younger children preparing to start school writing tasks and for older children whose handwriting remains messy, slow or physically tiring despite regular practice. At Genesis Neurogen, our occupational therapy team builds this programme around each child's specific gaps rather than generic worksheet practice, as part of our [occupational therapy](https://genesisneurogenrehab.com/occupational-therapy) services.

Who this programme helps

This programme is relevant at more than one stage. Younger children, roughly age four to five, may be referred while they are still building basic pre-writing shapes, such as vertical and horizontal lines, circles and crossings, that come before letter formation. Older children, from about six upward, are often referred when handwriting remains messy, slow or physically uncomfortable well after formal writing instruction has started at school. Both groups benefit from the same underlying focus on hand strength, grip and control, adjusted to what the child is working on at that stage.

Why some children struggle with handwriting

Handwriting is a physically demanding skill that depends on hand strength, finger dexterity, wrist stability, and the ability to plan and control small movements. When any of these are underdeveloped, a child may grip the pencil too tightly or awkwardly, press too hard or too lightly on the page, produce letters that are inconsistent in size or spacing, or complain that their hand hurts or gets tired quickly. This is a physical skills gap in most cases, not carelessness or lack of effort, which is why practice alone does not always fix it.

What the programme covers

Our occupational therapy team starts with an assessment of hand strength, grip pattern, pencil control and pre-writing shapes such as lines, curves and crossings, which come before letter formation. Based on this, the programme may include hand-strengthening activities, grip correction, controlled drawing and tracing exercises, and gradual progression from shapes to letters, always paced to the individual child. This often works alongside our Fine Motor Skills Development Therapy programme, since the two overlap closely.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I be concerned about handwriting?

There is a wide typical range in early school years; persistent pain, fatigue, or handwriting that is significantly behind classmates and not improving with normal classroom practice is a reasonable reason to have it assessed.

Is a painful pencil grip normal?

Occasional tiredness can be normal, but ongoing pain while writing usually points to grip or hand strength issues worth addressing; see our post on messy handwriting and a painful pencil grip.

School says my child has poor hand strength, is that the same thing?

It is closely related; our post on what an OT does about poor hand strength explains how the two connect.

Will this replace school handwriting practice?

No, it is meant to build the underlying physical skills alongside school practice, not replace it.
