Gross Motor Skills & Coordination Therapy for Children in East Delhi
Short answer: Gross motor skills are the larger movements that use the whole body, like running, jumping, climbing stairs, balancing on one foot, and catching a ball. When these develop more slowly than expected, a child can seem clumsy, avoid physical play, or tire quickly during activities that classmates manage easily. At Genesis Neurogen, our occupational therapy team assesses and works on balance, coordination and movement planning as one of the core programmes within our [occupational therapy](https://genesisneurogenrehab.com/occupational-therapy) services.

Signs of a gross motor or coordination delay
Common signs include frequent falls or tripping beyond what is typical for the age, avoiding playground equipment such as swings, slides or climbing frames, difficulty pedalling a tricycle or bicycle at the expected age, an unusual walking pattern such as persistent toe walking, poor balance when standing on one leg or walking on an uneven surface, and general reluctance to join physical games that peers enjoy. Some children also show poor body awareness, bumping into furniture or misjudging distances during play.
Why this matters beyond "clumsiness"
It is easy to dismiss these signs as a child simply being less sporty, but gross motor skills underpin classroom participation too, from sitting upright with good posture at a desk to managing PE and playground time without becoming a target for teasing. Persistent difficulty can also affect a child's confidence in group activities. Our team looks at whether the pattern is part of typical variation or reflects an underlying delay worth addressing directly.
How our gross motor therapy programme works
After an assessment of strength, balance, coordination and movement patterns, our occupational therapy team builds a plan using structured, engaging physical activities such as obstacle courses, balance exercises, ball skills and climbing tasks, graded to the child's current level and built up gradually. Where a sensory component is also present, such as fear of movement or swinging, this can be combined with our Sensory Integration Therapy programme.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not always; toe walking is common in early toddlerhood and often resolves on its own, but persistent toe walking is worth an assessment. Read more in our post on toddler toe walking.
It can be either or both; our post on children who avoid swings and slides explains how our team looks at this.
In most children referred for gross motor delay, it is not, but our team will flag it clearly and guide you toward further evaluation if anything in the assessment suggests that possibility.
Sessions are active and play-based, focused on specific balance, strength or coordination goals identified in the assessment, rather than generic exercise.
