Child Suddenly Started Stammering at Age 4: Normal Phase or Needs Therapy?

Short answer: Many children go through a phase of normal disfluency between 2 and 5 years, repeating whole words or starting sentences over as their language skills develop quickly. This is different from stammering that involves visible tension, sound prolongations, or the child becoming distressed or avoiding talking. If it persists beyond six months, is getting more noticeable, or bothers your child, a speech and language assessment is worth booking.

Normal disfluency versus stammering

Normal disfluency usually sounds like repeating a whole word ("I-I-I want that") or restarting a sentence, and it comes and goes, often more when a child is excited or tired. Stammering tends to involve repeating sounds or syllables ("b-b-ball"), stretching out sounds, or visible physical tension around the mouth or face while speaking. The pattern, not just the presence of some disfluency, is what helps tell the two apart.

Why this can appear suddenly around age 4

Around this age, children's ideas are developing faster than their ability to organise and produce fluent speech, which is part of why disfluency often appears or increases during a period of rapid language growth. For most children this settles down within a few months without any specific intervention. Parents in Mandawali and New Ashok Nagar often ask us if talking slower or finishing a child's sentences for them helps; generally, giving your child time to finish their own thought, without rushing or correcting, is more helpful than either of those.

When to book an assessment rather than wait

It's reasonable to book an assessment if the stammering has lasted more than six months, is increasing rather than easing, involves visible tension, or if your child seems frustrated, embarrassed, or starts avoiding talking in certain situations. Earlier support tends to be more effective, so there is no benefit to waiting once these signs are present.
